Made from the deeply pigmented yellow-orange root of the turmeric plant (Curcuma longa), turmeric powder has been a culinary and medicinal staple for thousands of years. Including turmeric in your diet as a spice is a great idea, but it’s almost impossible to get the therapeutic levels used in the research simply by adding turmeric to your meals. Over the last several years, most of the clinical research on turmeric has focused on a compound scientists managed to isolate from the turmeric root, called curcumin. Widely considered one of the most powerful compounds ever studied when it comes to promoting a healthy inflammatory response, curcumin is also a powerful antioxidant.
Research has shown that one reason curcumin is so effective at relieving joint pain and providing other health benefits is that it’s a potent inhibitor of the body’s most powerful inflammation-causing chemical, Nf-kappa beta.

But because turmerosaccharides are water-soluble (unlike curcumin, which is fat-soluble), they are excluded from the vast majority of turmeric extracts, which are produced using an alcohol extraction method. And as it turns out, if your turmeric supplement doesn’t include these water-soluble constituents, you’re missing out on the full pain relieving benefits turmeric can provide!
